Semblanza

ENG.

Mod Cárdenas (Guatemala, 1982) is a visual artist and clinical psychologist. He graduated in Clinical Psychology from Universidad Rafael Landívar in 2007 and is self-taught as an artist, with further study in sculpture, painting and drawing under leading figures of Guatemalan visual art. He lives and works in Guatemala City.

His practice is articulated through a transdisciplinary approach in which the textile, the sculptural and the documentary converge without hierarchy. The work draws its conceptual force from the friction between opposing materials: the harshness of industrial, sharp-edged components set against the tactile fragility of monochrome embroidery or handmade printmaking. The incorporation of objects carrying a strong symbolic charge — vestiges of informal labour, subversive or identity-bearing textiles — turns matter into a critical archive of collective memory. This aesthetic enquiry unfolds across a dynamic range of scales, running from the intimacy of the contained object to monumental intervention.

Conceptually, the work explores how social, religious, familial and political structures become imperceptibly embedded in behaviour. It is organised around five lines of enquiry: Protocolos del silencio [Protocols of Silence], on the learned phrase that is tempered before it is spoken; Máquinas heredadas [Inherited Machines], which identifies the mechanisms that assign trades and destinies in advance; Arquitecturas de la ilusión [Architectures of Illusion], centred on the latent threat behind every promise of shelter; Entramado de pertenencia [The Weave of Belonging], focused on clothing as a border between inclusion and exclusion; and Abstracción geométrica [Geometric Abstraction], which translates these tensions into formal terms. Taken together, the work asks to what extent it is possible to reconfigure what we receive without having chosen it.

Cárdenas has held fourteen solo exhibitions, among them Memorias del presente [Memories of the Present] (Fundación Rozas-Botrán, 2024). His work has been shown at Museo Miraflores and Museo Ixchel in Guatemala, the Museo de Arte de El Salvador and the Shintomicho Cultural Centre in Taipei, and he took part in the Florence Biennale as a guest artist (2019) and in fairs including Context Art Miami, Pinta Miami and Artexpo New York. He received the Highly Commended Award at Australia's Stencil Art Prize and a career achievement award from the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala. His work is held in the collections of the Congress of Guatemala, Fundación Rozas-Botrán, National Taiwan University Hospital and Luciano Benetton's Imago Mundi.
